Asian-American group backs Clinton

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign announced Friday the latest of her groups of Nevada supporters, rolling out a roster of Asian-Americans who are backing her in the state.

The group includes labor leader Rozita Lee, attorney Puoy Premsrirut and 31 others.

Lee, a board member of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, said in a Friday conference call that when she met Clinton for the first time, “I felt very strongly just from her essence, what she was talking about, that this woman, just on a woman-to-woman basis, was truly sincere and that she truly was sticking up for the (Asian-American) constituency.”

Lee said immigration reform, health care and education were important issues for Asian-Americans as well as a measure to get pensions for Filipino veterans of World War II, which Clinton has supported.

The New York senator and former first lady has pursued a strategy of racking up endorsements in Nevada, which is slated to hold the second-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest on Jan. 19. Clinton previously has unveiled groups of Hispanic and black supporters.

Clinton’s Nevada campaign chairman, Clark County Commissioner Rory Reid, said of the Asian-American group, “They’re going to help us both understand issues we might not understand and reach out to the community so we continue to have the momentum we have.”
