Alarm alerts residents; blaze leaves six injured

Six people were injured, including four who jumped from the second story of a condo, when a fire ripped through a northwest valley condo complex late Monday.

Those who were in the condo were saved by a smoke detector.

Las Vegas firefighters were called about 8:45 p.m. while a fire was burning in a garage at the Desert Pine Villas, 3905 Lazy Pine St., near Rancho Drive and Alexander Road, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the garage of the two-story, wood-frame building.

Three children leapt from a second-story window to escape the blaze. They suffered from smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene, Szymanski said. Their mother broke her leg when she jumped and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Szymanski said.

The children’s grandmother was hospitalized with breathing difficulties. She was able to get out the front door of the condo.

A man who was trying to douse the blaze when firefighters arrived suffered minor smoke inhalation, but refused medical treatment, Szymanski said.

The family was asleep when a smoke detector sounded its alarm, Szymanski said. When the mother went to investigate, she found the fire in the first floor.

The blaze destroyed a late-model car and gutted the garage. A condo above the garage suffered some fire and smoke damage. Another condo suffered smoke damage.

Officials estimate the damage at $200,000.

Investigators believe the fire started in the garage and then spread. The exact cause of the fire could not be determined because of the destruction caused by the fire, Szymanski said.
