Wind, dust advisories issued for Las Vegas Valley

Updated February 23, 2022 - 6:12 am

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Tuesday in Southern Nevada.

The advisory is in effect until 8 p.m.

The Clark County Department of Environment and Sustainability has issued a dust advisory. Elevated levels of blowing dust are expected with the forecast of high winds.

“We have a low-pressure system that is going to be passing over us in the next two days,” Brian Planz, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, said. “It is over Northern California now and it is going to be coming down, passing over us today and tomorrow. That’s what’s causing the wind.”

Winds are expected to range from 2o to 35 mph for much of Tuesday. Some gusts could be as high as 40 to 50 mph.

NWS Meteorologist Barry Pierce said around 5 p.m. Tuesday that the highest peak wind gust was 46 mph at Harry Reid International Airport. Other scanners in the area picked up winds between 40 and 50 mph, he said.

The wind advisory includes the Las Vegas Valley, Clark County, the Spring Mountains, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and parts of Nye County.

Pierce said there were no reports Tuesday of damage or accidents due to wind or lack of visibility to due to dust. Light showers were falling in parts of the valley around 5 p.m. Tuesday and could continue till around 9 p.m., he said.

Tuesday’s forecast has sunny skies with a high of 58 degrees. Overnight lows are expected to be in the 30s.

Planz said there is the possibility of modest precipitation overnight into Wednesday including snowflakes in Summerlin, the Red Rock National Conservation Area and Mount Charleston.

Wednesday has a chance of snow and rain early, with a slight chance of rain later in the day. It will be cloudy in the morning, becoming mostly sunny later, with a high near 54.

Pierce said winds were expected to be down to between five to 15 mph on Wednesday and that any precipitation was expected to be isolated and not accumulate.
