Wind brings rain to the valley, snow to the mountains
Cool weather came to Las Vegas Friday, bringing rain to the valley and snow to the mountains.
Scattered showers were expected to continue through the night and into Saturday.
A 30 percent chance of thunderstorms was predicted, National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Gorelow said. Showers will be mostly light to moderate.
Gorelow said this is the time of year for cold, low pressure systems to roll through the valley.
Winds between 10 to 20 mph accompanied cooler daytime high temperatures in the low 60s Friday. Nighttime lows were expected to dip into the low 40s.
Mount Charleston was expected to see 2 to 3 inches of snow between elevations of 6,000 to 9,000 feet, Gorelow said. Elevations above 9,000 feet may receive 3 to 6 inches of snow.
Planes going to and from McCarran International Airport were rerouted around the valley to adjust to changing runway configurations, causing delays of 15 to 30 minutes Friday afternoon, according to airport spokeswoman Christine Crews.
The directions of traffic on McCarran’s four runways are sometimes changed to account for wind speeds and direction, Crews said.
Saturday has a similar forecast with the best chance for scattered showers in the morning. East winds will blow a breezy 10 mph and highs will climb to about 76 degrees, Gorelow said.
The valley should warm up for Mother’s Day, Gorelow said. High temperatures will peak at about 84 degrees and north winds will blow about 10 mph.
