Storm prompts flood reports, warning for northwest valley — PHOTOS

Though record amount of rainfall in Las Vegas prompted a flood advisory for Summerlin Monday, there was no major flooding reported in the valley, the National Weather Service said.

A late-morning Monday downpour prompted a brief severe thunderstorm warning and brought .07 inches of rain throughout the day at the valley’s official weather station at McCarran International Airport. That beat the previous record for May 18 of .01 inch, set in 2011, meteorologist Clay Morgan said.

The rain was far heavier to the north and south.

Morgan on Monday night said that a gauge in Henderson recorded a total of .67 inches and a couple of gauges in west and northwest Summerlin recorded totals above an inch.

That was not the case around the Summerlin Parkway and Rampart Boulevard where there was only a total of .12 inches, Morgan said.

In some places, the rain was mixed with hail. NWS meteorologist Nathan Foster said they received some reports of hail around Summerlin and one report of nickel-sized hail in Henderson. He also warned of one inch hail that fell around Blue Diamond.

In Boulder City, thunder and lightning prompted a warning from Lake Mead National Recreation Area to be careful around large bodies of water.

Flooding was reported at U.S. Highway 95 and Kyle Canyon Road and elsewhere on the road to Mount Charleston.

Meanwhile, cameras at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon recorded fresh snowfall.

Thanks to the storm, Monday was expected to be the coolest day of the week, which reached its 73 degrees high about 12:30 a.m., Morgan said. The lowest temperatures of 61 degrees Monday was reached about noon, Morgan said, noting the unusual shift.

Light southwest winds breezed through the day with gusts as high as 25 mph, according to the weather service.

Tuesday’s high temperature could reach 82 degrees with calm southwest winds. Low temperatures will drop to 59 degrees, if not cooler, the weather service said.

The rest of the week will see highs in the 80s.
