Major Nevada roads reopen after flooding, fire

Drier weather Monday allowed for some roads affected by flooding to reopen.

Roads in Nye County that closed Sunday because of water have reopened. U.S. 93, which was closed 10 miles northeast of Interstate 15 on Sunday, also has reopened, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

No rain is expected tonight in the valley, says National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Foster. A slight chance for precipitation remains for tomorrow.

“It will be pretty quiet,” Foster said of the potential for any near-future storms.

Temperatures will peak in the high 70s for the rest of the week.

Even without the rain, some roads were a mess for travelers.

A 140-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 95 reopened Monday about 5:30 p.m. after a fire broke out Sunday at a Nye County hazardous waste disposal site.

The main north-south route on the western side of the state was closed Sunday because of flooding, but then reopened, according to Tony Illia, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Transportation.

After the fire started at US Ecology, about 10 miles south of Beatty, the state shut it down again, according to NDOT.

The closure started where state Route 160 intersects Highway 95, about 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas, and continued up the roadway to Tonopah.

Classes were canceled at several Nye County schools Monday because of the flooding and fire, the sheriff’s office said. Schools will be open Tuesday, Nye County said in a release.

At least one Nevada roadway remains closed because of flooding. State Route 267, which runs from the California line to Scotty’s Junction, is shut down in both directions.
