Las Vegas Valley sees smattering of rain

If you were out and about the Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday evening, you may have felt something more than heat: it actually rained.

A little.

Meteorologist John Adair, from the National Weather Service’s Las Vegas office, said he saw posts on social media by people who experienced a brief, drizzling rain. Then he saw the slightest blip on the radar, right over the valley.

“Most of it is evaporating before it hits the ground,” Adair said. The official measuring point, McCarran International Airport, didn’t record any precipitation.

But Las Vegas’ neighbors to the north, in the Spring Mountains and in Lincoln County, likely saw more precipitation and even thunderstorms, he said. Dust storms were blowing from the east, towards lakes Mojave and Mead.

And Adair expects this weekend to be the official start of monsoon season. On Friday — yes, Independence Day — or Saturday isolated thunderstorms are expected to make appearances across the valley.
