Las Vegas to get hot for fight weekend

The only May weather record threatened this weekend is the fighter’s, as temperatures will be hot in Las Vegas, but not hot enough.

Normal temperatures for early May are usually in the mid-80s, National Weather Service meteorologist Clay Morgan said. Highs for this weekend are expected to reach 96 degrees Friday, which will be the “peak of the heat,” 95 degrees on Saturday — the day of the big Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight at the MGM Grand Garden — and 93 degrees on Sunday, he said.

Thursday’s high may reach 95 degrees, Morgan said.

There will be some clouds, but it will be “more sunny than cloudy,” he said.

The projected highs are not threatening any record highs for May, since all of them are above 100 degrees, Morgan said.

Weather service meteorologist John Adair said that while it may seem uncharacteristically warm for April, these kinds of “spring swings,” described as when the weather goes from warm to cool and windy and back again, are commonplace.

The high pressure system that swept into the valley, bringing temperatures a few degrees shy of 1981’s 99-degree record for April 30, will be replaced by a small low-pressure system that will gradually cool the valley down next week.

Monday will likely come with temperatures in the high 80s, Adair said.
