Las Vegas could drop out of triple digits – in 26 days or so

Only 26 days until Las Vegas temperatures come out of the triple-digits — probably.

The average high on the last day of August is a cool 99 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

That’s something to look forward to on a day like Wednesday, when high temperatures at McCarran International Airport, the official measuring point for the valley, reached 107 degrees, meteorologist John Salmen said. The average for Aug. 5 is 104.

But Las Vegas didn’t get anywhere close to the record high for Wednesday: 113 degrees, set in 1969.

Relief may be in sight, though.

Partly cloudy conditions during the day Thursday will precede a mostly cloudy evening when a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast for the valley. Storms are expected to stay mostly to the south of Las Vegas, Salmen said.

Thursday’s high temperature should reach 103 in the afternoon and nighttime lows will be about 81.

Cloud coverage Friday is expected to keep valley temperatures relatively low, with afternoon highs reaching about 100.

Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of rain in the morning, dropping to 20 percent in the afternoon, Salmen said.

Weekend highs should stay around 100.
