First week of 2016 in Las Vegas will be rainy

Las Vegans who rang in the New Year in near-freezing temperatures can expect a calm, cool weekend before a week of “significant rainfall,” according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures around the valley dropped to 34 degrees at midnight Thursday before dipping even lower to a chilly 27 degrees just before sunrise, the weather service said.

New Year’s Day saw temperatures climb to 49 degrees and were expected to drop off to 33 overnight Saturday, the weather service said. Saturday’s afternoon high will reach 53 degrees, and the forecast low is 38 degrees, meteorologist Caleb Steele said.

Similar temperatures are expected for the rest of the week, with highs in the low 50s and nighttime temperatures in the low 40s, Steele said.

Also, “it’ll be kind of wet,” Steele said.

A “pattern change” is headed for the valley Monday evening, and showers should stick around through the end of next week, Steele said.

It’s too soon to say how much rain will fall or what parts of the valley will feel it most, but “most places should receive some rain,” Steele said.
