Cool, windy weekend in Las Vegas will warm up on Memorial Day

Updated May 24, 2018 - 10:13 pm

The Las Vegas Valley is likely to see winds and possibly a stray shower this weekend before settling into warm, clear weather on Memorial Day.

After a high temperature of 89 degrees expected Friday, a low-pressure system should move into the valley from California in the afternoon, National Weather Service spokesman Barry Pierce said.

“The main effect will be wind,” Pierce said.

Winds may gust up to 30 mph Friday afternoon and evening, bringing cooler-than-normal temperatures Saturday. After Friday, Memorial Day weekend winds should be light.

The normal high temperature for this time of year is about 92 degrees, meteorologist Clay Morgan said. Saturday’s high temperature is expected to reach 82, with a 30 percent chance of showers in areas west of Las Vegas, such as the Spring Mountains and Mount Charleston. Sunday may have a 20 percent chance of rain near Mount Charleston.

As for the valley, a light sprinkle is possible from Saturday through Monday, but Morgan said not to expect any significant rain over the weekend.

The forecast high temperature Sunday is 88 degrees, with a low of 66; the forecast high for Monday is 93, with a low of about 70.

Although the weather service doesn’t track Memorial Day weather specifically, because it falls on a different day each year, last year’s high temperature on Memorial Day was 99. The record high temperature for this part of May was 109, and the coolest high temperature was 64 degrees, Pierce said.
