Cold weather continues as Christmas approaches

The last day of Autumn saw continued chilly weather marked by very light showers in parts of the valley overnight, and in the case of Mt. Charleston, some snow.

The National Weather service says they measured 1 1/2 inches of snow at their recording station, with a reported 3 inches higher up the mountain at the ski resort, according to meteorologist Andrew Gorelow. The first week of winter is expected to remain dry, but there is a chance that the mountains will receive more snow on Christmas Day, Gorelow said.

Sunday’s high is expected to reach 55 degrees and the low to reach 40 degrees. Some outlying areas of the valley may dip to freezing overnight. Temperatures are expected to lower even further after Christmas, while this week’s high cloud cover “acts like a blanket” preventing colder temperatures, Gorelow said.

Winds are expected to remain low speed until the end of the week, when a new system moving into the valley will bring in higher gusts but no expected precipitation.
