Cold, rain coming to Las Vegas, with lots of snow for Mount Charleston

The first week of the new year will bring rain to the valley and the biggest snowfall of the season to Mount Charleston.
At least one foot of snow is expected at Mount Charleston “by the end of this week,” National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Stachelski said. That’s quite a turnaround from last month, when Mount Charleston broke three previous records for warm weather in December.
Umbrellas may prove handy this week in the Las Vegas Valley, as rain is expected this week, the National Weather Service said.
Saturday’s high reached the low 50s, slightly warmer than on New Year’s Day. The overnight low was 37 degrees. Sunday promises partly sunny skies and warmer weather, reaching a high of 57 degrees, and an overnight low of 43 degrees, with a 20 percent chance of showers, according to the weather service.
Winds have slowed significantly since Christmas, with speeds expected to be under 10 mph. Skies will become cloudier as the systems bringing rain move into the valley.
