Taxicab authority approves test of cab-monitoring system

The Nevada Taxicab Authority on Tuesday voted to go forward with a test of the RideIntegrity system designed to let taxi regulators track cab movements in real time as well as create an in-depth database.

Frias Transportation Infrastructure — an affiliate of Frias Transportation Management, the valley’s largest cab company — developed the system to allow regulators to advance cab-monitoring from the current paper sheets and meters contained in a dashboard box to GPS sensors that constantly feed data to a main database. Frias has promoted the system as one way to end long hauling of passengers between McCarran International Airport and the Strip.

Some drivers portrayed the system as a way to spy on them. Yellow Checker Star general counsel Marc Gordon also opposed moving forward with the test, contending it did not follow the state’s procedure for new technology, and said he would request reviewing it again next month.

The test will run from six months to one year, with Frias paying the cost and other cab companies allowed to join on a voluntary basis.
