February 9, 2015 - 8:41 pm
One person died and another was in critical condition after an ambulance and a scooter collided Monday in the area where Boulder Highway becomes Fremont Street, according to Las Vegas police.
The crash happened where Boulder Highway/Fremont meets Sahara Avenue at 11:54 a.m., Metro said in a news release.
The two scooter riders were taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where the 50-year-old male driver was pronounced dead, according to Metro Lt. Patrick Charoen. The 49-year-old female passenger was in critical but stable condition with multiple fractures including a broken pelvis, police said.
No other information about the scooter riders was available.
A MedicWest ambulance, a 2011 model Ford E350, was headed east on Sahara responding to a call with lights and sirens on when the crash happened, according to Metro Capt. Peter Boffelli. The scooter was traveling north on Boulder Highway when it entered the intersection at Sahara and headed straight in the right-turn lane, Boffelli said.
The rest of the traffic at the light was stopped for the ambulance, Boffelli said.
Police closed the intersection of Fremont/Boulder Highway and Sahara for about 5 hours while they investigated. The Regional Transportation Commission announced at 5:10 p.m. that all directions of traffic were reopened.
