33 Las Vegas shooting victims from California

Updated October 5, 2017 - 7:51 pm

Californians comprised more than half of the 58 people killed in the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting Sunday, according information gathered by Review-Journal reporters.

In contrast, only seven concert-goers lived in Nevada, with six of those from the Las Vegas Valley.

Reno resident Austin Meyer was in Las Vegas celebrating his 24th birthday at the festival when he was killed, a spokeswoman for Truckee Meadows Community College confirmed Thursday.

The college student was the last victim to be identified by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Authorities released the names of the victims Thursday night.

“I don’t think that’s surprising because a high percentage of people who come to Las Vegas come from California,” said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at UNLV. “It’s pretty close.”

Indeed, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s annual visitor profile study showed that nearly one-third of visitors to Las Vegas last year were from California.

Profiles of those killed can be read here.
