Northeast Thai eatery’s locale chosen for proximity to Nellis

Narit Chaiwon, 32, of the southwest valley worked as a server for about 10 years after moving to Las Vegas. Now the northern Thailand native is embarking on his first business venture with Narong’s Thai Kitchen, which opened in the northeast valley in August.

He named the restaurant after his father, who still lives in Thailand and taught him how to cook Thai dishes, Chaiwon said. He added that he started the business because he wanted to invest his money. His co-workers include a friend and two aunts, whom he lived with when he moved to Las Vegas.

Narong’s offers items such as Thai sausage, chicken with lemongrass and Khua Kai, which contains a distinctive sauce, Chaiwon said.

The most popular item has been pad Thai, a pan-fried noodle dish that can be served with tofu, pork, chicken, beef or shrimp starting at $6.95, depending on the meat. Other dishes that customers often order include curry (options include red, green, yellow, massaman, panang or roasted duck, starting at $6.95), pot stickers ($4.25) and Thai tea ($1.75).

Narong’s has a lunch special starting at $5.95 from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Chaiwon said he wanted to be in the northeast because of its proximity to the Nellis Air Force Base, adding that he offers a 10 percent military discount.
