High school student struck by car in North Las Vegas
A 16-year-old Cheyenne High School student walking home from school was struck by a car Friday afternoon in North Las Vegas.
The crash happened near Simmons Street and Gilmore Avenue just before 2:30 p.m., North Las Vegas police spokesman Eric Leavitt said. The teen was in a marked crosswalk when he was hit.
It occurred less than a half-mile from Cheyenne High School, which dismisses students at 1:25 p.m., Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said.
The boy was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Leavitt said.
Police advised people to avoid the area if possible.
In an email to parents, Cheyenne High School principal Zack Robbins said the boy was struck while he was walking home from school.
“This incident serves as an important reminder to discuss safety procedures with students in an effort to increase their awareness,” the email said. “We also want to remind all parents to use extreme caution when driving in school zones and in areas where students are traveling to and from school.”
