Wildfire threatens 100 homes near Reno

RENO — Nevada emergency officials say they continue to fight a wildfire that has threatened about 100 homes near Reno.

The Reno Gazette Journal reports the Jasper Fire was 30% contained as of late Sunday morning.

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District says the fire has burned about 1.8 square miles. Officials say a forecast of hot temperatures and high winds Sunday continued to worry firefighters.

The fire grew to about 1.25 square miles Saturday as it burned through cheatgrass and sagebrush. Officials say the blaze is thought to have been started Saturday afternoon by two men who were target shooting.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office have charged 23-year-old Alex Arias and 22-year-old Jorge Arias with destruction of property by fire with gross negligence.
