Threat from fire north of Reno diminished

The Tule Fire that is threatening the community of Sutcliffe in Northern Nevada is now an estimated 18,000 acres, according to a release from the public information officer for the Virginia Range Complex of fires.

The complex of fires includes includes the Tule, Anderson, Sage, Seven Lakes and Rock fires. All five fires started on landsmanaged by Carson City District Bureau of Land Management on Thursday because of a lighting storm and are mainlyburning in grass and brush. The fires are within a 30-square mile area, about 35 miles west of Reno.

The Tule Fire, the largest of the fires, was mapped at 7,267 acres Saturday afternoon before making a large run thatprompted the evacuation of Sutcliffe by Pyramid Lake Paiute tribal police, the release said.

No homes have been reported as lost Saturday, six structures from the Hardscrabble Ranch were destroyed Friday.

While the ranch has been unoccupied for several years, it was valued as an historic landmark, the release said.

Large areas of juniper, a very volatile wild land fuel, are contributing to the high rates of spread and large growth, the release said.
