Sandoval hosts governors’ confab at Lake Tahoe

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval will wrap up his yearlong stint as chairman of the Western Governors’ Association next week after hosting the organization’s annual meeting at Lake Tahoe.

Governors from 10 Western states are expected to attend the conference at Incline Village.

As chairman, Sandoval created a Western Governors’ Drought Forum to come up with best practices for drought management, water, energy and agriculture.

A report on the group’s findings will be released at the meeting. In conjunction with that, Sandoval in April created the Nevada Drought Forum, a panel of state experts that he tasked with developing recommendations by the end of the year for dealing with drought in the Silver State.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell will give a keynote address Wednesday. Michael Leavitt, former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary, Environmental Protection Agency administrator and three-term Utah governor, will address the gathering Thursday about the nation’s changing healthcare landscape.

Other discussions during the three-day meeting will focus on energy storage, transportation infrastructure and collaboration efforts to protect the environment and economy of the Lake Tahoe region.
