Philanthropist, businessman named to state Board of Regents

The founder of a Reno school aimed at educating gifted middle and high school students was appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents on Tuesday.

Robert Davidson replaces Ron Knecht, who was elected state controller in November. Davidson will finish Knecht’s term, which ends in 2016.

“Bob Davidson has supported Nevada’s education system for many years through his philanthropic efforts and as a founder of The Davidson Academy of Nevada. He has focused on helping Nevada’s gifted and talented students reach their full potential by providing a unique approach to our public school system,” the governor said in a statement.

Davidson, described as a philanthropist and successful businessman and lawyer, founded the Davidson Academy of Nevada in 2005 after he and his wife helped pass legislation to open the school on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno.

“Bob will bring a fresh perspective by pairing his extensive business expertise and deep understanding of Nevada’s students to the Board of Regents. He will be a tremendous asset and I thank him for accepting this responsibility,” Sandoval said.
