Mountain lion might be on the loose in Pahrump

A mountain lion may be loose in Pahrump, police said Friday.

In a statement, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office said it received two different reports of a large cat sighting Friday. The release said that Nye County Animal Control responded to the areas of Spanish Trail, Fox and Turner in Pahrump, armed with tranquilizer guns “should the animal be located.”

The Sheriff’s Office contacted large cat sanctuaries in Pahrump and confirmed that all “privately owned large cats were accounted for,” the release said.

Nye County schools were alerted to the large cat’s potential presence and were placed on lockdown, the statement said. Sheriff’s Office deputies were also stationed at Hafen and Floyd Elementary schools as a precaution.

Nye County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. David Boruchowitz said Friday afternoon that the animal was unable to be located.
