Minden pilot, 74, dies in glider crash in Pine Nut Mountains

MINDEN — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of a crash that killed a glider pilot in the Pine Nut Mountains southeast of Carson City.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim of Sunday’s crash as 74-year-old Joseph Lowenhardt of Minden.

Sheriff’s Capt. Dan Coverley says the pilot was the only person on the power glider.

Authorities found Lowenhardt’s body with the aircraft wreckage near Sunrise Pass about 8 miles east of Minden Tahoe Airport after the Nevada Highway Patrol detected signals from a locator transmitter about 2:50 p.m. Sunday.

Coverley says the crash scene is near a set of power lines feeding Carson Valley.
