Methadone cited in Laughlin baby’s death

The death of a 10-month-old Laughlin baby who died in September was ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner’s office on Tuesday.

Lokelani Morton-Speer was not breathing when medical personnel responded early Sept.11 to a home in the 1700 block of Cal Edison Drive, Las Vegas police said.

Lokelani died of acute methadone toxicity and bronchopneumonia, the coroner said.

Methadone is a narcotic prescription drug often used to treat heroin addiction.

The Clark County Department of Family Services opened a neglect investigation Aug. 21, records show. That allegation still is being investigated, and a separate report was filed after Lokelani’s death.

Police said in September they were waiting for an official cause of death before proceeding in the investigation.

As of Tuesday no arrests had been made, according to Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer.
