Worker dies at mining operation northeast of Las Vegas

A man died at a mining operation in the northeast valley on Monday, authorities said.

The death happened at the Lhoist North America quarry near Interstate 15 and Apex. North Las Vegas Fire Department Capt. Cedric Williams said firefighters were called to the site around 11:30 a.m.

He didn’t know the details of the case, however.

“We’re not exactly sure what happened to him,” Williams said. “OSHA is obviously going to be taking on the investigation.”

Calls to the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Monday were not returned.

Ken Gillespie, regional director of operations for Lhoist North America, said the company “deeply regrets” the death but he wouldn’t comment further. The site, about 9 miles north of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, produces dolomite and lime and employs 119 people, according to a 2011 study by the University of Nevada, Reno.

The man’s name and how he died will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s office.
