United Way of Southern Nevada appoints Red Cross exec as new leader

Scott Emerson, a longtime executive of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, will serve as the next president and CEO of the United Way of Southern Nevada.

“Scott embodies community. His strategic vision and leadership experience will be instrumental in guiding United Way,” Ed Garcia, chairman of the board of the United Way of Southern Nevada, said in a news release announcing Emerson’s appointment.

Emerson began his career in law enforcement, according to the Red Cross website and his LinkedIn profile. In 31 years with the Red Cross, he worked as director of emergency services in Missouri and as CEO, senior associate for response and director of emergency services and service delivery, all in Las Vegas. He began working for the organization as a volunteer, which he did for 12 years.

Emerson will begin his new job Feb. 1 and focus on community outreach and supporting the organization’s data and research initiatives, the release said.

The search for a new leader began soon after Bob Morgan resigned the post in August to move to Buffalo, New York. He planned to work for a development company there.

Robyn Caspersen took Morgan’s place as interim CEO. She was a United Way donor and board member, previously having co-chaired the nonprofit’s Women’s Leadership Council.

Caspersen has worked in the organization’s Southern Nevada region since moving to Las Vegas in 2008.
