Toddler killed in Saturday crash identified

The toddler who was killed in a suspected DUI crash Saturday afternoon has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Elena Rivera, a 3-year-old Las Vegas girl, was killed in the accident, the coroner’s office ruled.

Las Vegas police responded just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday to the crash at East Carey Avenue and Sandy Lane where a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 had rear-ended a 1993 Toyota Corolla, Metro said in a press release.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene suggest that the 24-year-old driver of the Corolla, Robert Gonzales, was stopped in an eastbound lane on Carey, just east of Sandy, talking to a pedestrian from inside the car when the Dodge Ram crashed into the back of the car, police said.

Gonzales, Josefina Sanchez, 34, a 2-year-old girl and Elena were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. Elena died at the hospital.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, 70-year-old Charles Washington, was arrested on Saturday in regards to a DUI resulting in death and substantial bodily harm, according to police.
