Three killed, two injured in Sunday rollover accident
April 4, 2011 - 10:10 am
Three young people are dead following a fiery crash early Sunday morning on East Lake Mead Boulevard near Pabco Road at the base of Sunrise Mountain.
Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Joseph Fackrell said alcohol and speed might have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Killed in the 3 a.m. crash were Sergio Alfonso Brian Diaz Guzman, 20, who was driving the white 2002 Chevrolet Suburban; Omar Jimenes, 18, and an unidentified 15-year-old female.
Two other passengers, 18-year-old Eliza Michelle Cortez and a second 15-year-old were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, said Fackrell.
Fackrell said the vehicle was headed west when for unknown reasons it left the road and overturned, bursting into flames .
The driver and the deceased 15-year-old, who was a passenger in the right rear seat, remained in the vehicle. Jimenes and the two survivors were ejected.
The Review-Journal found Cortez’s Facebook page. She listed Basic High School in Henderson as her school, and Omar Jimenes is listed among her friends. His profile said he attended El Dorado High School.
A spokeswoman at Basic High said rumors were circulating but the school had not been informed of the accident.
The last car accident in the region to claim three lives occurred in June when Nicholas Sheafer drove his red Mustang past road closed signs in a construction zone on Interstate 15 and struck a beam at a high rate of speed.
Sheafer, 19, and his passengers Robert Inouye, 23, and Tiffanee Anderson, 19, died at the scene.
