Strong winds hitting Las Vegas Valley
May 28, 2011 - 4:37 pm
It’s going to be another windy weekend — at least for part of it.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas Valley until 6 p.m. Sunday. Expect southwest to west winds from 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.
Winds were gusting around 45 mph at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas at 3 p.m.
Strong winds are expected through much of the day Sunday. The strongest winds are expected to be late this afternoon and tonight.
Gusty winds will create difficult driving conditions on area roads. Highways that will be impacted include Interstate 15 from Baker to Las Vegas, as well as Highway 95 from Las Vegas south towards the California-Nevada border.
Choppy to rough waters are expected on area lakes, include Mead and Mohave. Expect hazardous conditions for boats and personal watercraft.
Strong winds over desert areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to under a mile at times.
