State commission accepting applications for vacant Clark County court seat

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Clark County District Court bench.

The commission on Monday said lawyers interested in the Department 29 seat have until 5 p.m. Sept. 23 to submit an application. The vacancy follows the death of District Judge Susan Scann in July.

Attorneys with at least 10 years of legal experience, including two years in Nevada, are eligible to apply.

Public interviews of applicants are tentatively scheduled for the week of Oct. 24 at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas.

The commission will then recommend three finalists to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who will make the final appointment.

The selection commission has seven permanent members — the chief justice of the Nevada Supreme Court; three non-attorneys appointed by the governor; and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Neither the governor nor the state bar may appointment more than two members from the same political party, or two members from the same county.

For District Court vacancies, the governor and state bar each appoint one temporary member from the judicial district where the vacancy occurs.
