SB I-15 to close at Primm Wednesday morning

Southbound Interstate 15 will be closed at Primm early Wednesday morning for a sign installation project just south of the California border.

The overhead sign will direct traffic just south of Yates Well Road to the new California Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility that opens later this summer.

The primary highway between Las Vegas and Southern California will be blocked from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. All southbound traffic will be held at Primm. Northbound I-15 traffic won’t be affected.

The California Transportation Department is encouraging motorists to plan their trips to avoid the closure period

While Caltrans says there are no viable detours to avoid the closure, motorists heading south could take U.S. Highway 95 south to Searchlight, then state Route 164, the Joshua Tree Highway, west into California. The highway becomes Nipton Road when it enters California, eventually rejoining I-15 south of Primm.

That detour would take motorists 37 miles out of their way and Route 164 is a two-lane road.

The new California facility will allow California Highway Patrol officers to conduct inspections of commercial trucks to identify unsafe vehicles and equipment. The state eventually plans to replace its agricultural inspection station at the facility from Yermo, farther south on I-15.
