GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin.

The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living.

The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.

Between eight and 15 girls are needed to form a team.

MMA EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Round 3: Knockout Cancer for Candlelighters’ Kids annual MMA is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Pearl at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road.

The event was created to help raise funds and awareness for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, which provides support and services for local families of children diagnosed with cancer.

LAS VEGAS WRANGLERS SET TO PLAY AT THE ORLEANS

RAINBOW YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS CONTINUE

Rainbow Youth Soccer League’s indoor league sign-ups are set for 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday at Villa Pizza, 3385 S. Durango Drive.

The indoor session is set to run December through February. The cost is $65.

TENNIS ASSOCIATION PLANS FREE TENNIS PLAY DAYS

The United States Tennis Association is planning USTA Free Tennis Play Days in celebration of Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play throughout the country in an effort to get youths active and involved in tennis.

The events are open to the public with an emphasis placed on family participation, effort and sportsmanship.

The following are events taking place in Las Vegas:

SPECIAL RECREATION PERMITS OFFER YEAR-ROUND FUN AT RED ROCK CANYON

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area announces the opening of several commercial year-round Special Recreation Permits (SRPs).

SRPs include at least two permits for off-highway vehicles, one for ongoing hiking, two for ongoing guided bicycling, one for ongoing guided equestrian and one for ongoing scooter/motorized bikes for Scenic Loop Drive.

Those interested in applying for the SRPs must submit a completed application package by Nov. 1 to the Red Rock/Sloan Field Office at HCR Box 5500, Las Vegas, NV 89161.

Applications will be rated and an applicant(s) chosen from the most qualified applicants. Notification of selected applicants will be made by January 2013.

WALK N’ ROLL SET TO BENEFIT ALS OF NEVADA

The 12th Annual Walk n’ Roll and 5K Run for ALS of Nevada is set to begin at 6 a.m. Oct. 13 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way.

The event is open to the public and helps fund services for ALS patients and their families.

Each participant 18 or older is required to donate a minimum of $35 to participate in the Walk n’ Roll or the 5K. For those 17 or younger, the donation is $25 for the walk and run. Children 5 or younger may participate free. Awards will be given in all age groups for the 5K, as well as to participants who raise the most money for both events.

The event schedule is:

Registration for run or walk at event: 6 to 8 a.m.

Welcome from Mayor Pro Tem Stavros S. Anthony: 7:45 to 8 a.m.

Events starts: 8 a.m. run; 8:15 a.m. Walk n’ Roll.

A balloon release in honor of ALS patients is planned at the conclusion of the event in Memorial Tree Grove.

HEART WALK PLANNED IN MOUNTAIN’S EDGE

The annual American Heart Association Heart Walk is set for 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at Mountain’s Edge, 9275 S. Buffalo Drive. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend. The event raised more than $285,000 last year for the American Heart Association. A significant portion of the proceeds fund biomedical research and education programs. SWIMMING LESSONS AVAILABLE FOR VALLEY RESIDENTS

Las Vegas Swim Academy, 6017 Fawn Ave., has begun registration for swimming lessons. Private, semiprivate, Baby & Me and swim team groups are available.

Baby & Me classes are scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 17.

All Baby & Me classes are 30 minutes long. Class size ranges from four to six students. The cost is $100 for eight classes. The pool is heated to more than 90 degrees.

CITY MAKES REGISTRATION FOR RECREATION PROGRAMS EASIER

The city of Las Vegas has launched its new online registration system, RecTrac, that offers customers an easy way to participate in recreation activities, city sports leagues and Safekey.

By visiting recreation.lasvegas nevada.gov, customers can browse listings as a guest or log on as a registered user to enroll in programs and activities offered by the city. Customers can also call 229-2330 or come into a recreation center to register and pay during normal business hours. Safekey payments can be made online, by phone at 229-3399, or at the Safekey main office, 1651 S. Buffalo Drive.

Programs and activities that require prerequisites or age verification may not be eligible for online registration.

Those who already have an account through the city’s previous online registration system will need to use the phone number they gave when they opened the account for the user name. The password will be the primary account holder’s last name. Those needing to open a new account should follow the instructions on the website.

TENNIS CLUB PLANS ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

The Las Vegas Gay Tennis Club has scheduled its 10th annual tournament Friday through Sunday at Darling Tennis Center, 7901 W. Washington Ave. Proceeds from the event are to benefit nonprofit Golden Rainbow, which provides housing and direct financial assistance to men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

The entry fee is $100 and includes singles and doubles matches. A draw party is planned to hand out player packets at 6 p.m. Thursday at Charlie’s Las Vegas, 5012 Arville St., and all players and fans are invited to attend. Matches begin at 8 a.m. Friday and run through 3 p.m. Sunday. Players 18 or older at all skill levels can enter the tournament. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION PLANS HEART WALK ON FREMONT STREET

The American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life. Walk and Run is planned at 7 a.m. Oct. 13 on Fremont Street near First Street.

The event is set to include a 5K and one-mile walking route as well as a timed 5K heart run. Free health screenings, entertainment and food are planned. All survivors of heart disease or stroke will receive a red cap and T-shirt. After the 7 a.m. registration, breakfast is scheduled for 7:30, opening ceremonies for 8, the 5K run start for 8:30 and the 5K walk start for 8:40. RAPPEL OFF PLANET HOLLYWOOD TO SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEVADA

Planet Hollywood, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is offering the opportunity to rappel more than 300 feet from the hotel’s rooftop for Over the Edge, a fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Nevada. A preview day is planned Oct. 12, and participants can jump from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 13.

To participate, individuals must raise or personally donate a minimum of $1,000 to Special Olympics Nevada. No experience or prior training is required to join.
