MAYOR’S CUP SOCCER SHOWCASE PLANNED THIS WEEK

The Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase soccer tournament is planned Saturday through Monday, with team check-ins Friday.

Admission is free for spectators. Team registration has closed.

The largest international youth soccer tournament in the country is set to be played at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, 7353 Eugene Ave., with other Las Vegas fields to be announced.

More than 6,000 soccer players ages 14 to 19 from at least 11 foreign countries and 28 U.S. states are set to square off in soccer fields around the valley. The event will be co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club and is expected to attract college soccer coaches and recruiters from across the country to scout for both male and female athletes. Spectator admission and parking are free at all games.

Matches are to be played from 8:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Medals and trophies are to be presented to winning teams following each championship game. For more information, including schedules and matches, visit lvmayorscup.com.

COED FLAG FOOTBALL REGISTRATION OPEN

Coed fall flag football registration for players ages 6 to 14 is open through March 1. League play is set for March 16 to May 11.

Registration is available at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607, and the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive, 702-229-1100.

The cost is $75 per person and includes an NFL team jersey and shorts. A birth certificate is required to register. Volunteer coaches are needed. Cost includes a postseason tournament. No games will be scheduled for March 30.

TEAM IN TRAINING BEGINS FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

The Southern Nevada office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announces its 2013 season of Team In Training, which teaches participants to complete half and full marathons while raising money and community awareness about blood cancers.

More than 50 participants are committing to run either the Nike Women’s Marathon Half in April in Washington, D.C., or the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & Half Marathon in June. Participants hope to raise, on average, $3,000 each to support the organization and run in the races dedicated to LLS. For more information, call 702-436-4220.

PEDOMETERS TO BE GIVEN AWAY AT YMCA

In celebration of American Heart Month and Valentine’s Day, the YMCA of Southern Nevada is offering up to $75 in savings off a new individual or family membership and a free red pedometer for those who join Thursday through Saturday. No coupon is required, and the offer is good at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane; the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. GARDENING IN SMALL SPACES WORKSHOP SET FOR SATURDAY

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans to offer a workshop, Gardening in Small Places, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The class, taught by Dr. Angela O’Callaghan, will show students how to make the most of a small space. Topics are set to include containers to use, differences in potting mixes, using artificial light, fertilizers and success with seeds.

Class space is limited, and preregistration is required. There is a $25 fee, which includes class materials.

MS RELAY SEEKS RUNNING PARTNERS

The MS Run the US 2013 Relay, which is slated for April 16 through Sept. 17 and is to be divided into 22 segments, is currently seeking 14 running partners to take part in each leg of this coast-to-coast run. Each segment covers approximately 140 miles of running over the course of six days. All proceeds raised will support MS research. The relay is set to begin in Los Angeles in mid-April and wrap up in New York City five months later.

US TENNIS ASSOCIATION-NEVADA SEEKS EQUIPMENT DONATIONS

The United States Tennis Association-Nevada seeks donations of old wooden tennis rackets, usable tennis rackets, old trophies, ball machines, items for a silent auction or raffle, a digital photo camera, an office phone system and computers or laptops.

Leisure Connection for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is a social group planned each month. The outings are geared to assist high-functioning adults with social skills and independence in the community. TAO, JUMP FOR JOY FOUNDATION PLAN HEALTH DANCE EVENT

The Jump for Joy Foundation and TAO Cares, the charitable arm of TAO Asian Bistro, Nightclub & Beach and LAVO Italian Restaurant & Nightclub, have presented a free event, the Dance Against Obesity Camp J.U.M.P in an effort to fight childhood obesity. Children 6 to 17 are invited to TAO Nightclub at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 17 for an afternoon of dance instruction. Featured performers include Visual Audio, The Prodigy Dance Crew, Sean and John, Hypnotix/WHK/TBP.

While the kids are working on their moves, parents can attend a seminar teaching healthy eating habits led by TAO Group Corporate Executive sous chef Marc Marrone and Paul Rosenberg of the Real Results Fitness nutrition program. ADAPTIVE RECREATION PROGRAM PLANNED FOR THOSE 7 TO 21

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for those ages 7 to 21 with disabilities is set from 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $27 for one to three days, $36 for four days and $45 for five days, per person.

WHEELCHAIR ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT FREMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL

YOGA CLASS RAISES MONEY FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE SANDY

Sunny Arfa’s Yoga at The Park, which meets at The Vistas Park, 11311 Alta Drive, each weekend in warm weather, raised $200 for the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy.

GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin. The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living. The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.

Between eight and 15 girls are needed to form a team. COMMUNITY GARDEN CLASS PLANNED AT FLOYD LAMB PARK

A free community garden class is planned from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road.

REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS

The North Las Vegas Recreation Division’s Activity Schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is now available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city’s recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

RAPTOR PLAY PARK OPENING PLANNED

The Raptor Play Park grand opening is set from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex, 6105 N. Durango Drive. The event is for all ages.

This new phase to the park will add landscaping and turf areas, lighted sidewalk extensions, a picnic shade shelter, site furnishings, off-site improvements and a scaled F-22 Raptor Stealth Fighter Jet exhibit. Light refreshments will be offered while supplies last.

NORTH LAS VEGAS RECREATION DIVISION ANNOUNCES HEALTH CAMPAIGN

The North Las Vegas Recreation Division has announced its Get Moving! Get Healthy! campaign, which aims to encourage healthy exercise and social activities through the division’s programs and sports.

Each month, the Recreation Division will launch an online video highlighting a recreational, social or sports program offered at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, or the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St.

Featured first is the Recreation Division’s martial arts class offerings. The campaign also will highlight activities from its Social Seniors and after-school programs.
