Public meetings set on county sewage pipeline project

North Las Vegas has tried many ways to keep swarms of mosquitolike midges away from the roughly 20 million gallons of treated sewage pumped daily into Clark County’s Sloan Channel.

The city has invested heavily in anti-algae bulldozer dredging and even tried stocking the storm drain with thousands of midge-hungry mosquitofish.

Starting next year, they will try an above-ground pipeline that will carry the treated wastewater to the Las Vegas Wash.

County Commissioner Tom Collins plans to host the first of two public meetings on the proposed $15 million project at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Cora Coleman Senior Center, 2100 Bonnie Lane.

Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani plans to sit down with constituents for a second meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Hollywood Community Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd.

County spokesman Dan Kulin said city and county leaders hope to begin construction on the 4½-foot-wide, 4½-mile-long pipeline next year and wrap up by the end of 2014. He said that motorists should expect lane closures at most cross streets near the channel between Judson and Sahara avenues.
