Motorcyclist killed, driver detained in southeast Las Vegas crash

Updated January 1, 2025 - 8:00 am

A motorcyclist in the southeast Las Vegas Valley was killed after a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night, and the driver of a pickup was detained on suspicion of impairment.

The crash occurred at 11:40 p.m. on East Flamingo Road and South Seville Street, between Interstate 11 and Mountain Vista Street, according to the Metropolitan Police Department news release.

Investigators say a 2005 Nissan Titan was westbound on Flamingo and approaching Seville in the only left turn lane. A 2024 Yamaha YZFR1 was eastbound on Flamingo at a high rate of speed. The crash occurred when the Nissan made a left turn in the path of the speeding Yamaha.

The front of the Yamaha collided with the front right of the Nissan, ejecting the rider into the front yard of a private residence.

The victim, a 35-year-old man from Canyon Country, California, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as Pedro Chavez-Martinez, 45, of Las Vegas, showed signs of impairment and was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for DUI and child endangerment-related charges. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. in Las Vegas Justice Court.

The rider’s death marked the 159th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction for year 2024. The crash remains under investigation by Metro’s Collision Investigation Section.
