Motorcyclist hospitalized after hitting truck in central valley

A man was critically injured after crashing a motorcycle into a turning truck in the central Las Vegas Valley early Monday afternoon.

Metro’s Fatal Detail is investigating the crash, which occurred just after 12:30 p.m. at 927 Decatur Blvd., near the intersection at Charleston Boulevard, Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

Detectives said a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle and a 1991 Chevrolet pickup were traveling in opposite directions on Decatur when the pickup turned left in front of the motorcycle.

The 24-year-old man on the Yamaha struck the rear passenger side of the Chevrolet, flew off his bike and slid to a stop on the road, police said. He was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The 62-year-old man driving the Chevrolet finished the turn and stopped, police said. He was not hurt.

Northbound Decatur from Charleston was closed for nearly four hours. The road reopened about 4:15 p.m., according to the Regional Transportation Commission.

Police originally reported that the motorcyclist and an occupant of the truck were taken to UMC, but Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer later said that only the motorcyclist was hospitalized.
