Man in critical condition after Sunday motorcycle accident

An 18-year-old motorcyclist was in critical condition Monday morning after an accident Sunday in the southwest valley.

Las Vegas police said Frederick Carapel, from Las Vegas, was riding a 2008 Honda CBR 1000 motorcycle east on Sahara Avenue, near Grand Canyon Drive, about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Carapel did not notice a 2009 Ford Focus that was stopped at a red light when he crashed into the back of the vehicle and was thrown from the motorcycle.

Carapel was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford, Monet McRay, 32, was not injured.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
