Man dies in Strip hotel jump

A man committed suicide Friday morning by jumping from the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The 25-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, jumped from a ledge on the 14th story of the Strip’s newest hotel, said officer Marcus Martin, a Las Vegas police spokesman.

Martin said police first received reports at 4:45 a.m. of a suicidal man at the hotel. Officers tried to negotiate with the man, who was not a resident of the Las Vegas area, but he jumped at 6:26 a.m.

James White, a Dallas resident who witnessed the suicide from his hotel room at the Aria, said the man jumped shortly after sunrise.

White said it appeared that the man lost his balance and tried to grab an edge as he fell.

“He lost his balance a couple times, then just fell over,” he said.

The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the man.
