Man arrested in fatal shooting near Boulevard Mall

The 25-year-old man who was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near the Boulevard Mall said he was scammed out of money before shooting a man to death, according to a Las Vegas police arrest report.

Anthony Joseph Harris was booked on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon in the death of 24-year-old Philadelphia resident Nickey Zarwood.

Las Vegas police found Zarwood with a gunshot wound at the Oasis Bay Apartments in the 1600 block of East Katie Avenue, near the intersection of Maryland Parkway and Twain Avenue, about 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Just before he was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Zarwood, who also goes by the alias Jerry Zarwea, told police he was shot by someone named “Armani.”

Zarwood died at the hospital about 4:40 p.m.

According to arrest report, an acquaintance of Zarwood saw the report of the shooting on the news and contacted police on Monday.

The acquaintance, who was not named in the report, said the Philadelphia man came to Las Vegas with friends during the weekend of the Mayweather-Pacquaio megafight in hopes of making money by scamming people.

But Zarwood had gotten in an argument with his friends and was left behind, the report stated.

The acquaintence who came to police said Zarwood asked them to pick him up at the Albertons on Flamingo Road, near Maryland, on May 9.

When the friend showed up, they saw Zarwood talking with an Albertson’s employee, who was identified as Roderick Moore, and later get in a dark gray Nissan with a burgundy hood, driven by Harris.

Zarwood made arrangements with his friend to pick him at Maryland and Katie in 30 minutes because he was in the middle of a scam.

Police arrested Harris on traffic-related warrants during a traffic stop the same day.

Harris admitted to police that he used the name Armani because he sold marijuana, according to the arrest report.

But he initially told police he had no involvement in Zarwood’s death, the report said.

However, Harris told police that he and Moore were scammed out of $1,000 by Zarwood the day he was shot.

Harris said he later saw Zarwood walking north on Maryland and pulled into a parking lot at Maryland and Katie. Zarwood asked them for a ride and got in the car.

The arrest report said that Harris pulled into the Oasis Bay Apartments parking lot to confront him.

Zarwood accused Harris of destroying the money that was meant to be sealed in a foil bag for three hours in order for “some chemicals” to “turn the other paper into matching bills.”

Harris got out of the car and was holding a gun that he had gotten from Moore earlier that day.

The two argued some more about the money, and Harris admitted to police that he became angry.

Zarwood turned to run and Harris shot at him one time, the report said. He told police he saw the bullet strike Zarwood in the back as he ran away.

Then Harris drove off, the report said.
