Man, 78, dies after crash sends car into Mesquite lake

A 78-year-old Mesquite man died Tuesday when his car fell into a lake after he sped through an intersection and crashed into a curb, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

James Matthew McMurray Jr. was driving a 2004 tan Chevrolet Impala about 12:49 Tuesday afternoon when the accident happened.

McMurray was headed north on Grapevine Road in Mesquite, about 81 miles northeast of Las Vegas. NHP said he sped through the intersection at Pioneer Boulevard, ignored a traffic sign and failed in an attempt to make a right turn on Pioneer.

The Impala crossed the intersection and westbound lanes of Pioneer, struck a raised curb and then headed into a landscaped area on the northeast corner of the intersection. The car crossed a concrete sidewalk and fell into the man-made lake, NHP said.

McMurray was pronounced dead at the scene. This is NHP’s 10th fatal accident of 2015.
