Las Vegas headed for wet holiday weekend
Watch out, Las Vegas, it might be a wet holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that blankets Clark County from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.
Light showers began to sprinkle the valley Friday morning.
Saturday and Sunday will be hot and humid. Residents can expect temperatures in the mid-90s, with about 70 percent humidity, weather service meteorologist Chris Stumpf said.
Temperatures will be a little higher on Labor Day, but humidity will drop.
The chance for storms carries through Saturday and Sunday, and people should be aware of flood watches.
A flood watch is nestled between a flood advisory and a flood warning in the seriousness of flooding.
An advisory warns that non-dangerous levels of flooding can occur.
A watch is to alert people that conditions are favorable for flash flooding, and it’s time to roll up those windows and be prepared in case thunderstorms turn torrential.
Any storms that do develop can be intense, Stumpf said.
A watch covers a large area, is put out ahead of potential thunderstorms and tells residents to pay attention because storms can develop and produce heavy rains, leading to warnings.
A warning is a serious notice issued by the weather service and it serves to warn that there is imminent flood danger. It covers a smaller area than a watch and residents are cautioned to avoid flood waters.
There is a possibility that flood warnings will be issued over the weekend in parts of Clark County, Stumpf said.
