Firefighters put out blaze in wood pile

Burning piles of wood caused extensive smoke near Bonanza Road and Rancho Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a call of a barn on fire shortly before 2:30 p.m., said Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski. They found two large piles of burning wood.

The fire appeared to have started in the surrounding grass and wind pushed the flames towards to wood, Szymanski said. Neighbors attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose, but to no avail. The hose did not stretch far enough to reach the edge of the fire.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 90 minutes.
