Red Rock Resort rolls out Friday concert series for summer

If you’re going to rock, then you have to roll.

Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd., is gearing up for its Friday night Red Rock ‘n’ Roll concerts. The resort is bringing in top names but with ticket prices that are more in tune with today’s economy: $30.

The new Friday night concert series was scheduled to begin May 13.

“It’ll be a great party atmosphere,” said Kyle Markman, director of nightlife for Station Casinos. “This is where locals are VIPs.”

Sean Kingston, best known for rhythm and blues, hip-hop and dance hall reggae, was set to open the series May 13.

Judy Alberti, vice president of entertainment for Station Casinos, said she has no problems booking well-known talent.

“Red Rock Resort has garnered such a name for itself (in entertainment), there’s a huge buzz in the industry about it,” Alberti said. “It’s made my job, really, easier.”

So much easier that she snapped up other hot acts and booked them: Barenaked Ladies are scheduled to perform May 27 with several top-five alternative rock hits, such as “It’s All Been Done,” “One Week” and “Pinch Me”; and the Grammy Award-nominated Goo Goo Dolls are slated for June 3 with hits with such as “Name,” “Slide,” “Better Days” and “Give A Little Bit.”

Echo & The Bunnymen was scheduled for Friday , but the show has been cancelled. Refunds are available at the original point of purchase, and tickets purchased online or by phone will be automatically refunded.

Alberti said if these acts appeared on the Strip, admission would be between $39 and $99 .

The Rock ‘n’ Roll series follows the success of three separate concerts in 2010 that featured Don Henley, Rob Thomas and Train. This year’s concerts will come with two pluses. DJ3, the official disc jockey for the UFC, will start the night by spinning the hits from 7 to 9 p.m.

Radio station Mix 94.1 plans to broadcast the concerts live.

Radio host Mark DiCiero said he’s looking forward to bringing the concerts to listeners and that it provides a different dynamic than his show, “Mark and Mercedes in the Morning.”

“The direct interaction with people is so different from doing the radio show,” he said. “We’re interacting with people on a one-on-one level. … It’s going to be a whole lot of fun.”

“With the Mix radio demographic, we’re hitting the ‘sweet spot,’ ” Alberti said.
