NSAA PLANNING GOLF CLASSIC

The Nevada State Apartment Association is planning its Golf and Putting Classic from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Badlands Golf Club, 9119 Alta Drive. Limited tickets and sponsorships are available; 36 golf teams and 36 putting teams are scheduled to play. Raffle proceeds are to benefit the American Red Cross and the Twinkle Toez Foundation. The NSAA is a nonprofit organization that provides the Nevada multi-housing industry with legislative support, education and community outreach. For more information, visit nvsaa.org.

BOULDER CITY GOLF TOURNAMENT HONORS FORMER NV ENERGY PRESIDENT

Former NV Energy President Steve Rigazio died at age 47 in 2001 from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In recognition of May as ALS awareness month and to pay tribute to Rigazio, ALS of Nevada is set to hold a golf tournament to raise money and educate the public about the disease. MOTHER’S DAY weekend EVENT PLANNED
AT ANGEL PARK golf club

Angel Park Golf Club is planning a mother-daughter golf event during Mother’s Day weekend Friday-Sunday. The event includes three rounds of golf, a three-night stay at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa, a wine-tasting reception, massages, tee gifts and prizes and a post-golf awards event. The schedule includes:

— Thursday: Arrive and check into the JW Marriott (special gift provided courtesy of the JW Marriott)

— Friday: Practice round on Palm or Mountain course; welcome reception and wine tasting, 6 p.m. at Angel Park

— Saturday: Round one tee times between 10 a.m. and noon; post-round massage at the JW Marriott

— Sunday: Round two, 8 a.m. shotgun start; post-round awards

NONPROFIT MEDICAL GROUP PLANS
5K RUN AND WALK

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada has announced its Fight for Health Super Hero 5K Run and Walk, set from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North, routing through downtown Las Vegas to the future site of VMSN’s downtown flagship clinic.

All walkers and runners are encouraged to dress as superheroes for the event. All registrants are to receive a complimentary T-shirt, and the first 200 people are to receive a superhero cape. Prizes are planned for the best costume, best team comic representation, most creative costume and best kids costume for children 13 or younger. The costume contest is set for 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the charity run and walk will go toward the organization’s clinic operations and to the Florence Nightingale Fund.

Early registration is open through Wednesday. Participants can register at vmsn.org or at active.com, reference VMSN Fight for Health, or at the event from 6 to 7:30 a.m. Event sponsorships are also available. RUN FOR A HERO

The Douglas J. Green Memorial Foundation Fallen Heroes 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. May 18 at Bruce Trent Park, 1600 N. Rampart Blvd. at Vegas Drive.

May 18 is Armed Forces Day. The 5K will honor service members with ties to Nevada who have died.

ZUMBA-THON PLANNED AT THE SILVERTON

A two-hour Zumba class that incorporates pool workouts is planned for 6:30 p.m. May 17 at the Sway Pool Lounge at the Silverton, 3333 Blue Diamond Road.

The class is to be taught by a variety of instructors in a nightclub atmosphere. Giveaways, door prizes, photo ops and energetic music and instructors are scheduled. To join the party, attendees must bring $5 and five canned food items to help Three Square food bank. Attendees must be 21 or older with valid ID. No water bottles or outside food or beverages will be permitted.

WALK-A-THON PLANNED AT SUNSET PARK

The seventh annual National Angelman Syndrome Walk-a-thon is planned for 8 a.m. May 18 at Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road. Registration is available at 7 a.m., though early registrars will receive a T-shirt. The event includes a two-mile walk or a 5K run/bicycle ride around the park. Fishing is allowed with a permit. Drinks, refreshments, entertainment, face painting, balloon twisting and more are planned.

UNITED WAY PLANS GOLF BENEFIT

The second annual NV Energy — IBEW 396 United Way Golf Benefit is set for 6:30 a.m. May 21 at Silverstone Golf Club, 8600 Cupp Drive.

Registration for the four-person scramble event is at 6:30, and the shotgun start is set for 7 a.m. Awards and a banquet are planned immediately following play. Prices are $5 per ticket, $20 for five tickets and Mulligans $10 each. First-, second- and third-place prizes are planned.

TO VETERANS

Walters Golf has announced it will offer a complimentary round of golf to all active and retired military personnel May 26. SIGN UP FOR SUMMER CAMPS

The city of Las Vegas invites parents to enroll children in summer day camp programs at six area community centers. Open registration is ongoing at several locations until the camps are full.

Registration must be done in person. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each location for details.

Summer camps are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning June 10. There will be no camp July 4.

Age-appropriate activities, including field trips, sports, special events, physical fitness and games, arts and crafts and nutrition training are planned under the supervision of trained staff members.

The following four locations will offer summer camps, priced at $75 per child for the week and $70 for additional children in the family:

— Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607. Ages 6 to 11. Camp ends Aug. 23.

— Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St., 702-229-6374. Ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

Two community centers plan to offer themed weeklong specialty camps with additional activities, cooking and/or field trips. Participants will enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $75 per erson for the week and $70 for each additional person in the family. Registration for this program is set to open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS SUMMER CLINICS TO ARRIVE IN JUNE

The Harlem Globetrotters comedy basketball team plan to bring their Summer Skills Clinics to 24 Hour Fitness clubs in the Las Vegas area June 10-15.

During the six days in Las Vegas, Globetrotters players are slated to lead 18 two-hour clinics at two locations:

9 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. June 10-12 at 24 Hour Fitness Agassi Super Sport, 2090 Village Center Circle.

SHRINERS golf tournament
PLANNED FOR OCTOBER AT TPC summerlin

The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament is planned for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an official PGA Tour event. The 2013 tournament is set to feature more than 130 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse, with a winner’s share of $1,080,000. All proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The event’s fourth annual Women’s Day luncheon, Kick Off Your Heels, is planned for Oct. 15. It will be catered and feature a guest speaker. Tickets are $125 per guest. The luncheon sold out in 2012, so early purchases are encouraged.

HUMANA GUIDANCE CENTERS SPONSOR WALKING GROUPS

Humana Guidance Centers are offering free walking groups led by a certified personal trainer. The program aims to positively impact seniors’ health by motivating and engaging them to take action and improve their fitness level and mental outlook by learning the proper walking and stretching techniques.

Participants will receive a free pedometer and at the end of each outing can upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk or at home to tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.

Leisure Connection for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is a social group planned each month. The North Las Vegas recreation division’s activity schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city’s recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE
WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

RIDE FOR READING EVENT PLANNED AT RTC ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING

The Las Vegas City Council, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian invite residents to a free Ride for Reading bike riding event from 9 a.m. to noon Friday. The ride is to begin and end at the RTC’s administrative building parking lot at 600 S. Grand Central Parkway. Registration is set for 9 a.m. The ride is to begin at 9:30 a.m., pausing for healthy refreshments and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new bike and pedestrian facility in Rotary Park, 901 Hinson St. Free refreshments are to be provided while supplies last. The ride will then continue to Vegas Verdes Elementary School, where books will be donated to the children during a lunchtime gathering.

Donation boxes for new and gently used children’s books are located at all city of Las Vegas fire stations and community centers, the Development Services Center, Las Vegas City Hall, the RTC, and many area bicycle shops. Books also will be accepted at the ride registration.

The event is part of the national Ride for Reading organization, with sponsors including the city of Las Vegas, Councilwoman Tarkanian, the RTC, Look Out Kids About, McDonalds, the Clark County School District and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS
SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin. The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living. The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.
