LAS VEGAS CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO MOVE VETERANS MEMORIAL TO HERITAGE PARK

The Las Vegas City Council decided to move the $1.2 million to $1.4 million veterans memorial to Heritage Park, not Huntridge Circle Park as originally planned, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The council voted 7-0 Aug. 17 to move the proposed memorial from the smaller Huntridge in large part because Heritage Park has more parking and infrastructure to support visitors. There was some resistance to moving the park, with critics saying the neighborhood along Las Vegas Boulevard just south of Washington Avenue has too much crime and blight to be home to the somber memorial.

Although city staff members and the nonprofit Las Vegas Veterans Memorial Foundation said Heritage Park was their first choice, there’s still a chance it could land elsewhere.

BOARD GAME DONATIONS TO HELP
GIRL SCOUTS LIFT PATIENTS’ SPIRITS

In an effort to earn the community service-based Bronze Awards, Girl Scout Troop 607 is collecting board games until Monday to donate to the patients of Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway.

Their campaign, dubbed Board No More, has a goal of collecting more than 500 games to donate in hopes of brightening patients’ hospital stays. The troop hopes to deliver the donation Sept. 17. The Girl Scouts are fourth- and fifth-grade girls.

SENIOR COMMUNITY EVENTS SCHEDULED

Several events are planned this month at city of Las Vegas community and senior centers.

n Food for Health and Soul is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. every Thursday through Sept. 29 at the Doolittle Senior Center, 1930 N. J St. The event, slated for those 50 or older, is free with a $2 annual membership. Registration at least one week in advance is required. This five-class series is designed to help participants prepare family recipes for better health. Enrollees must commit to attending all five classes. This event is sponsored by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

n Free Bingo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 14 at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Advance registration is required. Call 229-1515 for more information.

n A Health & Wellness Awareness Fair & Luncheon for those 50 or older is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center. A 1 p.m. luncheon is st to follow. The cost is $5, and registration before Sept. 12 is required. Participate in a blood pressure check, balance test, heart rate check, Zumba gold and tai chi demonstrations, among other activities. n Chicken ‘N’ Waffles is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Doolittle Senior Center, 1930 N. J St. The event is slated for those 50 or older, and the cost is $5. Register at least one week in advance. For more information call 229-6125.

FREE LANDSCAPE TOURS PLANNED
AT DEMONSTRATION GARDENS

A series of free landscape tours is scheduled to be offered this fall at the Demonstration Gardens on the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s campus, 8050 Paradise Road, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The schedule is:

n The summer landscape tour is scheduled for Saturday. It will ask the question, What Survived the Summer?

n The fall landscape tour, Now’s the Time to Plant, is slated for 9 a.m. Oct. 1.

n The winter landscape tour, Painting Your Garden with Color, is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 19.

To join the tours, meet in the courtyard at the Lifelong Learning Center.
