This weekend is the 13th annual Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival, with the bowling events scheduled for Sam’s Town, 5111 Boulder Highway, and the music events at a number of venues in downtown Las Vegas. Events run from Friday through Sunday.

Las Vegas writer, illustrator, musician and publisher Pj Perez is on the road nonstop promoting his Pop Goes The Icon works at comic book conventions all over the country. This week, he’s headed to the Phoenix Comicon to plug his graphic novel “The Utopian,” the story of James Douglas, a self-made emo teen superhero who takes on high school bullies and hides his identity behind caps, hoods and dark glasses. Last?!?,” he asks in disbelief. “Everyone’s talking about it’s my last this or my last that. It’s not like I’m dying or anything.” Discussing the quickly approaching end of his 12-year reign as the “World’s Happiest Mayor” is, understandably, a touchy subject. He gets a bit emotional. After all, he swears in the new mayor July 6.

The race to fill the soon-to-be empty Las Vegas City Council seat has been plagued with debate about whether candidate Adriana Martinez truly lives on Sweeney Avenue. However, neighborhood issues above the mudslinging still remain. Residents questioned the Martinez and her challenger Bob Coffin about how they would handle abandoned homes, squatters pirating electricity on these properties, homelessness, code enforcement and crime in the area.
