Sanna Klipfel, principal and administrator at Lamb of God Lutheran School & Preschool, was awarded the Administrator of the Year Award for the Pacific Southwest District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (including Arizona, Southern California and Southern Nevada).

The award is given to administrators who have shown a dedication to education and reflect the strong commitment, involvement and passion that makes a school successful.

Klipfel has worked in Lutheran schools for 37 years.

Carolyn and Oscar Goodman were honored as Child Advocates of the Year by the Court Appointed Special Advocate Foundation on Oct. 22.

Television anchor Gary Waddell acted as master of ceremonies for the evening.

Other award recipients:

Raymond Giddens Jr. received the Outstanding Caregiver Award; PJ Moore received the Outstanding Case Worker Award; Deborah Abdulla, Ted Hartwell, Danielle Hofer, Alisa Mann and Betty Schmitz received the Outstanding Newcomer Award; Jan Evans, Kevin Golob, Robert Gunnoe, Scott Jelinek, Deniece Lopez, Ruth Merrill and Deborah Willis-French received the Outstanding Service Award; Lorrie Curriden received the Excellence Award; and Judge Frank Sullivan received the President’s Award.

Funds are raised by the CASA Foundation to provide clothing, necessities, tutoring, school supplies and scholarships for foster care children.

Jeremy Aguero has been named 2011 Alumnus of the Year by t he William S. Boyd School of Law.

Aguero formed Applied Analysis, a Nevada-based advisory services firm, in 1997, and has become knowledgeable on Nevada’s economy, its real estate market and a range of public policy issues.

He graduated with honors from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he earned the Wm. M. Weinberger Outstanding Graduate Award. He earned a juris doctorate degree from the William S. Boyd School of Law in 2004, graduating cum laude and earning the Dean’s Graduation Award.

Bank of America’s Local Hero Award winners were lauded at a ceremony on Oct. 27.

Chris Cappas, director of human resources operations at Wynn Las Vegas/Encore, was given the award for her community service and mentoring skills.

In 1998 she signed up for the Clark County School District Mentor Program and mentored a sixth-grade student at Fremont Middle School. She later got involved in mentoring students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and was a big sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Judy Cebulko, board of trustees chair at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, was given the award for her work in arts and education. She helped finalize the museum’s move to Symphony Park.

Camille Duskin, creator of Hattie’s House, was honored for her work in arts and culture, including working to provide affordable cultural performances. Duskin created Hattie’s House as a haven for the arts in Las Vegas. The house is “rented” for free for recitals and rehearsal space. A portion of ticket sales from each performance is donated to the Gateway Scholarship fund for young musicians.

Monique Harris, founder of Southern Nevada Children First, was honored for her work in social services and youth development. In the early years of the organization, Harris took women and their babies into her own house and cared for them. A social worker for more than 10 years, Harris enjoys helping homeless youths.

Candice Nichols, executive director for The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, was honored for her community service.

Nichols has been a community activist and professional in the non profit sector in Nevada for more than 20 years. Her activism began in 1989 when she became the chairwoman of Pro-Choice Advocacy, a coalition that codified Roe v. Wade in Nevada through a ballot initiative in 1990.

Nichols then joined Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada as director of education, then director of public affairs.

She has worked with Aid for AIDS of Nevada as director of prevention education for nearly 12 years, and she has worked with the homeless population in various capacities.
