Amy Montoya of Las Vegas has qualified to represent Nevada at the 2013 Veteran World Fencing Championships in Varna, Bulgaria, in October.

Montoya was a second-place team member this year, after having placed as the first alternate the last two years.

During the 2012-13 season, she fenced to three bronze medals.

She has been coached by Yves Auriol at the Fencing Academy of Nevada.

Natalie Ransom has been named chief nursing officer at MountainView Hospital.

Ransom previously served as chief nursing officer at Southern Hills Hospital.

She has Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in nursing.

Kimball Anderson has been appointed to the American College of Healthcare Executives as the interim regent representing Nevada.

Anderson is a fellow of the ACHE and has been CEO of Southern Hills Hospital since December 2009.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in health care administration from the University of Colorado.

The Nevada Broadcasters Association is planning its 18th annual gala Aug. 17 at Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd.

The NBA Community Achievement Award is to be presented to Steve Schorr of Cox Communications, Colin Cowherd of ESPN and Ed Henry of Fox News Channel.

Tom Humm of the Beasley Group is to be honored with the NBA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Oscar and Carolyn Goodman are to receive the NBA Pinnacle Award for leading the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas.

Las Vegas HEALS, formerly known as the Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition, plan to honor four local physicians for their contributions to the community on Sept. 25 at Red Rock Resort. They are: Jim Christensen, M.D., Florence Jameson, M.D., Yevgenity Khavkin, M.D., Benjamin Rodriguez, M.D.

The award is inspired by the pioneer exploits of Dr. Royce W. Martin, Las Vegas’ first chief surgeon, circa 1905.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has reappointed five members of the Nevada State Contractors Board’s Commission on Construction Education to three-year terms.

The tenures for Jennifer Lewis, Dale Lowery, Shawn Danoski, David McElwain and Edward Horan will run through June 2016.

The commissioners are responsible for distributing and overseeing grant funds to approved organizations with the goal of teaching students and young professionals construction skills and career opportunities in the construction industry.

Averill Kelley, a social studies teacher at Mojave High School, was one of 32 educators from across the nation selected to attend the C-SPAN Classroom’s 2013 Educators’ Conference in Washington, D.C., July 11-12.

The conference brings together high school teachers who specialize in social studies and/or technology and use C-SPAN in their classrooms.

Richard Reitz, a professor of ornamental horticulture at the College of Southern Nevada, cycled 585 miles from Niagara Falls, N.Y., to Toronto with the STIHL Tour des Trees.

The ride started July 28 and traced a counterclockwise route around Lake Ontario, concluding a week later in Toronto at the International Society of Arboriculture’s annual conference.

The ride attracts cyclists and tree advocates, with an opportunity to cycle a different part of the world each year while planting trees and raising awareness of the role of research in preserving the health of urban trees.
