Local moms recognized by group

American Mothers Inc. has named Zan Peterson Hyer as its Nevada Mother of the Year for 2013.

The Lakes-area resident was invited to American Mothers Inc.’s 78th annual national convention in New York City April 25-28. She is also set to be honored at the Nevada Mother of the Year Brunch, planned for Saturday at the Southwest Career and Technical Academy, 7050 W. Shelbourne Ave.

Hyer is a mother of five, a grandmother of four and community adviser to the Attendance Zone Advisory Commission for the Clark County School District.

Montsdarrat Wadsworth of Winnemucca, a mother of 10, was named American Mothers Inc.’s Nevada Young Mother of the Year for 2013.

Community Mothers of Honor are: Kizzy King of Las Vegas. Yvonne Henriquez of Las Vegas, Elizabeth Serrano of Las Vegas, Heather Fisher of Blue Diamond and Lisa Ashley of Henderson.

AMI is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., that is dedicated to honoring motherhood while offering support to mothers nationwide. It is the official sponsor of Mother’s Day and Mother of the Year. The purpose of AMI is “to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundations of the family and the home.”

AMI honors a select few mothers annually who represent the highest qualities of motherhood and who have had a profound impact on their children’s lives and the lives of other parents, children and the community.

Each state’s Mother of the Year is chosen from nominated women 45 or older, and the state’s Young Mother of the Year is chosen from nominated women with children under age 18.

A National Mother of the Year and a National Young Mother are chosen from among state mothers during AMI’s annual national convention.
